Literacy is important but dont neglect the spoken dialect. It is the rather stiff-sounding fusha aka Modern Standard Arabic MSA that is the starting point for most students of Arabic as a foreign language. You need it to develop academically to read to write and use a dictionary. But if you want to speak Arabic on holiday or do business beyond simple pleasantries you also need to learn a local dialect.

Why are native Arabic speakers offended whenever spoken to in Modern Standard/Classical Arabic Fus'ha? Please do check the details before answering Quora.
It could well be that they are put on the spot because as Laila says they're not always very fluent in Fusha. There's also perhaps a familiarity effect as they're used to communicating in spoken Arabic and get thrown by someone using Fusha. It's not a normal language variety for face-to-face interaction whatever the veneration and prestige that it's regarded with. The naturalness factor is important anecdotally if I am faced with a non-native speaker of English who uses a very formal textbook English i go on my guard as I expect communication is going to be at least stilted and at worst painful. 1.1k Views 7 Upvotes Answer requested by.
